Every commercial crop grown in the county has its roots in the seeds and seedlings local farmers stick in the ground. And every seed or seedling is the result of a deliberate and painstaking process of selection intended to preserve and amplify desirable traits while minimizing or removing those that are undesirable. At Brokaw Nursery in Saticoy, the leading supplier of citrus and avocado trees to California growers, that process centers around the marriage of hardy, disease-resistant rootstock to the best fruit-bearing wood. Grafting, being demonstrated here by Brokaw employee Antonio Vargas of Cabrillo Village, is integral to that process.
